How To Find The Perfect Dog Breeder
Someone recently asked that I post on my page how to choose/know you are dealing with a good breeder? A good breeder can be hard to find, but following are some tips to help you in your search.
- They’re not in the business to solely make money. Their dogs compete in dog shows.
- They can discuss with you the honest advantages and disadvantages of owning a dog of a specific breed.
- They rigorously screen prospective dog owners to make sure their puppies go to good homes. Be prepared to answer many questions about your lifestyle and pet owning experience.
- Their written contracts stipulate that if at any point you are unable to keep the dog, you must return him or her.
- They only sell healthy animals and guarantee them for a reasonable period of time.
- They test the parents for hereditary diseases that may be common in that breed.
- They are careful to breed only dogs with good health and temperament.
- They keep dogs in the home as part of the family – not outside kennels.
- Have dogs that appear happy, healthy, and are excited to meet new visitors – they do not shy away from people.
- Shows you where the dogs spend most of their time – Clean, well maintained area.
- Encourages you to spend time with the puppy’s parents – at a minimum the puppy’s mother when you visit.
- Only breeds one or two types of dogs and is knowledgeable about what are called ‘breed standards’ (the desired characteristics of the breed, such as size, proportion, coat, color, and temperament)
- Has a strong relationship with a local veterinarian and shows you records of vet visits for the puppies.
- Explains in detail the potential genetic problems inherent in the breed (Every breed has specific genetic predispositions) and provides documentation through organizations such as the Orthopedic foundation for animals (OFA) – that the puppies parents and grandparents have been tested to ensure that they are free of these genetic problems.
- Offers guidance for caring for and training your puppy and is available for assistance after you take your puppy home.
- Feeds high quality “premium” brand pet food
- Does not always have puppies available
- Encourages multiple visits and wants your entire family to meet the puppy
A dog show is a great place to find a good breeder. You can also check AKC’s website for a registered breeder.
Once you think you have found your breeder, here are some good questions to ask:
1. Do you require that my puppy be spayed or neutered? You want them to say yes.
2. What is your worming schedule for your puppies?
3. Do you vaccinate your puppies, and when do you do it? Ask what they vaccinate for and where they buy their vaccinations. Note: Some breeders do not vaccinate for all vaccines listed here and that is ok.Puppies should receive:
- Lept o
4. When do you wean your puppies? We prefer to let nature take its course. If a breeder has a set time for weaning, we suggest you look elsewhere five/six weeks normal
5. When does my puppy get to come home? 10-14 weeks best. If they are letting puppies go to homes earlier than 8 weeks, you should look elsewhere. Puppies need to be with their littermates at least this long so they can learn important bite inhibition.
6. By this time your prospective breeder will usually have already told you about the bloodlines and pedigrees they use, and what testing to do. If they don’t you should ask.

Residency Training Programs
In addition to group classes and private lessons we offer residency programs/board & train programs. What’s the difference you may ask? In group classes and private lessons, we teach you how to train your dog. It’s up to you to put in the time, repetitions to teach your dog. In residency programs, we train your dog and then train you. This option works great for people who do not have time to train themselves due to a busy schedule or just want quick results. Or hey, the next time you go on vacation, instead of just boarding your dog, send him through a residency program and come home to an educated canine. We send our human children to school and college, why not send your K9 kid too.
The following training programs are designed to teach dogs and owners at different levels. In order for all of our training programs to be successful, it is imperative for owner(s) to work at home to change patterns and behaviors as instructed by your trainer. Your willingness to incorporate the obedience commands into everyday life, as instructed by your trainer, is crucial for success. The time and energy that you invest will determine how much you and your dog are able to accomplish. The following is a breakdown of what each residency training program offers you and your dog. All of our programs can be customized or modified to accommodate you and your dog’s specific needs and wants. Call 269-465-OBEY (6239) for more information.
- Training dogs are required to have the following vaccinations: DHLP, Parvo, and Rabies. We also recommend the Corona and Bordatella vaccinations. Dogs that are without vaccination records or overdue on vaccinations will not be accepted for training.

Sometimes, you need a little help at home. Does your dog jump on guests as they enter your home or try to barge out the front door? Would you prefer your dog back up on command, lay down and wait for your guests to greet your dog?
In-Home training is appropriate in these circumstances. In fact it is the best way to go as the home environment is where the dog’s behaviors are shown and the training program can be personally tailored to your needs. In-home training is also great for owners whose’ work schedules preclude them from attending group classes, have more than one dog to train and are not inerested in our residency programs.
Cost for In-Home sessions can vary depending on the distance trainer must travel, behaviors requiring modification and time estimated to do so. Evaluations can be done to asses the amount of time needed and the evaluation is free. Call or email for more details.
For surrounding areas a single In-Home session costs $75 and sometimes this is all you need. For those who may need more try one of our packages and save some money; 2 sessions/$135 (That’s 10% off, Savings of $15) or 4 sessions/$255 (That’s 15% off, Savings of $45) .

Got a New Puppy?
Puppy training begins the moment you bring your new puppy home. The first 16 weeks of a puppy’s life is the most critical. It is in this period that most puppies can develop up to 90% of their attitudes toward people, other animals and their environment.
Get your pup started right! Every year more than 5 million pets are euthanized in this country, mostly by shelters who cannot place all the unwanted pets. Most dogs brought to a shelter are there because they got off to a bad start. Our pup preschool program was established to help reduce this statistic and assist you in raising a well mannered family pet.
Puppy preschool is designed to teach owners to better understand their puppy’s needs, establish effective communication, curb behavior problems and show owners how to properly socialize their new puppy.
This course is for puppies 7-16 weeks old. (If your puppy is older than 16 weeks, but is very shy please call he may benefit greatly from attending preschool) Please note while we accept any breed or mixed breed of dog for puppy preschool, all puppies must be healthy and have proof of all required vaccinations.
Our Puppy Preschool consists of one private puppy consultation and three weekly group classes. Cost is $59
Can’t attend the weekly classes? That’s ok we can still help with a Private Puppy Consultation for $25.
You will receive one private consultation, an informational packet, and three puppy group class sessions. Upon completion of our preschool program, your dog will be better prepared to participate in formal obedience training. The cost of puppy preschool may be applied toward a basic obedience group class or residency program. Its like getting preschool for free or a basic obedience group class for half price. What a deal! Call us at 269-465-OBEY(6239) to make arrangements to enroll your puppy.
Initial Private Puppy Consultation
The first step in Stay and Obey’s Puppy Preschool enrollment process is to call and schedule your one-on-one private puppy consultation with our certified trainer.
Since all breeds were bred for different qualities and have varying personalities, this private consultation will allow our trainer to evaluate your puppy’s personality type and temperament. Our trainer will be able to offer you direction on raising your puppy’s personality type, breed, and temperament. During this consultation we will also offer behavior counseling in regards to house training, play biting, chewing, jumping up, walking on a leash, and answer any other questions you may have regarding your puppy.
You will also be provided with an informational packet full of material that will further assist you at home. After your private puppy consultation, you and your new puppy will be invited to join our weekly group. (Puppy consultations do not have to come before group should your schedule not allow for it)
Can’t attend a group class and just need some help with the basics of potty training, play biting, chewing etc. no problem, Private Puppy Consultations are available for $25.00..
Through the guidance of our trainer and the participation of other puppy owners, you will learn a great deal about socialization, confidence building, proper handling, basic problem solving, and other owner educational topics.
At puppy preschool you will also learn confidence building techniques to help your puppy attain positive experiences. Our weekly confidence building exercises will help to further establish the critical communication and trust that is necessary for a well mannered family pet. You will be taught proper introduction techniques for items such as vacuum cleaners, wheel chairs, noise making items and more.
Owners are taught the importance of early socialization to aid in Puppy’s development in forming opinions about people and dogs.
Owner Educational Topics
Each week there will be new topics covered that will help you better understand your puppy. Also at this time the trainer will answer any questions that you may have concerning your puppy.
